VIRGO-LIGO collaboration awarded the Breakthrough Prize

The Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for 2016 has been awarded to the LIGO and VIRGO collaborations for the first detection of gravitational waves. One third of the prize has been assigned to the fathers of LIGO, Ronald Drever (Caltech), Kip Thorne (Caltech), and Rainer Weiss (MIT), the rest of the prize will be shared by the 1000+ members of the two collaborations who contributed to the historical discovery. The winner list includes TIFPA affiliates Giovanni Prodi, Matteo Di Giovanni, Matteo Leonardi, Shubhanshu Tiwari and Maria Concetta Tringali.
