ICD - International Cosmic Day 2021

A workshop aimed at involving high school student in the experimental Cosmic Ray science

The ICD 2021 at TIFPA

The International Cosmic Day (ICD) is an international initiative guided by the DESY collaboration that was born to bring students, teachers and scientists together and learn about Cosmic Rays.
Furthermore, the spirit of the initiative includes showing students how to carry out a measurement and get in contact with groups all over the world to compare and discuss their results, working like a real scientist in an international collaboration.

It is the occasion to understand what are cosmic particles and why they are so important to understand the origin and the evolution of our Universe, and to know directly from scientists working in the Cosmic Ray field how they can be measured.

On November 22, 2021 TIFPA hosted the first local edition of ICD after a two years break. We guided the students to find answers to these and more questions.
The ICD 2022 edition at TIFPA was held at Teatro Concordia of Povo(TN) and for the occasion was opened for the first time to both high school students and freshmen students of the Physics department of the University of Trento who showed interest in the high-energy and Cosmic Ray Physics.
These gave us the occasion to introduce slightly more complex topics like cosmic particle detection and fundamental Physics, keeping involved both youngest both more senior students.
We guided them through the mysteries of the field with introductory presentations held by the experts of the centre.
Students and experts together then participated in a real cosmic ray science experiment: the measurement of Cosmic Muon flux and its angular dependence.
The students, guided by the experts, participated all its phases: Introduction to the instrument, explanation of the signal, actual measurement, collection and analysis of the data.
Finally, we presented our results to the participants of other institutions, in a video call with the INFN sections of Milano and Sassari.
